Personal Website for Rockwell Smith

June 4, 2011 I took the exam for my ham license -- I am happy to say I passed the technician class, the general class, and the Extra.   I have totally enjoyed the journey from simply watching the hobby to active participation.  To follow the journey and updates as I got on the air, click on the call sign:

On October 24, 2010 during the morning, Betty Smith - Don's wife and my mother - left us peacefully to be with Don.  Freed from the confines of a failing body and a loneliness she often expressed, we rejoice with her having completed her journey; a journey she has been ready to take for some time. My tribute to Dad is here.

I'd like to thank Nick Shultz and Micah Harding for helping me make this site possible.  If you have any website needs, they can be contacted here.

My older sister Heather, who has been an author for many years, has reluctantly been dragged into the computer and internet world little by little.  She has finally been asked to post a blog.... and here it is.    And, I have recently learned she has added yet another....

Personal note:  While many of you reading my site are strangers, there are those of you that knew my family.  If you are one of those, please see the update on the page I have posted in memory of Dad.  Thank you.

Welcome to my website.  This site began in May of 2006 and I'm still adding pages and material, and some pages are unfinished. Please check back now and then, and also, there are the forums. If you have any other headings you think might be of interest, let me know.   The original front page is still here .........

We all started somewhere -- this is 1969

Actually, that wasn't when I started in radio -- it is the earliest picture I've been able to locate.   (I've found an older one.....it's here.)  I graduated from college in 1969 from UPS in Tacoma, and that's a shot of me at my part-time gig at what was then KASY in Auburn, Washington. I started years earlier while still in high school in Salmon, Idaho in 1962.

Since you found my site, WELCOME. I hope you'll visit again soon since I am still building many of the pages. I have a keen interest in history of the radio industry back in the 60's as well as what is going on today. I'm still in the business in Boise, Idaho as an engineer for Journal Broadcast Group and the 6 stations they have here. I've got a few forums set up where we can share our past, our present, and some of our silly ideas. I don't know where it will all go, but I expect it to be a fun trip. If you have any suggestions let me know. You can reach me through the contact link at the top of the site.

Ok -- Here's a more recent picture. This was taken 2 years ago at our mountaintop transmitter site.

-- That's all for the moment. More to come.

For anyone who wants to know what I REALLY look like click here.

Historical Footnote:  On this page and other pages I make reference to KASY in Auburn, Washington and KBMY in Billings, Montana.   These stations no longer exist under these call letters today.   KASY, previously at 1220 in Auburn, is now KBSG out of Seattle and at 1210.   KBMY is now KMZK, still at 1240, but at a new location and with a Christian format.
